Pet Insurance Review

If you have pets then this article is going to be especially useful to you. I happen to have 2 cats that have been a part of my life since they were 4 weeks old and they are now 17 going on 18 years old. Anyone who has pets that are lucky enough for them to reach their twilight years will know how expensive it can be to keep them fit and healthy. I only wish that I had taken out pet insurance at an earlier stage. Let me give you an example of my monthly outgoings based on what my 2 wonderful girls need in order for them to still be happy in life.

They both now have kidney problems, this is very common in both cats and dogs, it costs me just over £20 every 28 days to buy the kidney pills that they require so that they are not constantly vomiting everywhere (more on that in a minute). They also need a special diet of food that helps keep their kidneys functioning, this costs £15 per 1.5 Kilo a bag and as there are 2 of them I can get through 2 bags each month. On top of this I spend £7.50 for a tube of something called “engergel”, this ensures that their livers are in tip top condition (both have had problems in this area). If you add to this the cost of the amount of kitchen roll and anti-bacterial cleanser I can get through in a month due to the vomiting (especially in the summer months), it all starts to add up.

This is where pet insurance comes in, if you add up what I have already spoken about, we are talking almost £60 per month just on food and prescription items that both of my cats need so that they have quality of life. This doesn’t include the odd visit to the vet for a blood test to make sure that they are healthy or the odd overnights stay when they get really ill. This can cost in excess of £80 each time! I dare not even tell you how much this adds up to over a 12 month period.

Now you have some background information on how much pets can cost you as they get older. If you have pets, don’t do what I did (incidentally pet insurance wasn’t really around when I first got my cats), if it was then it was really expensive to get. Start early and get yourself some pet insurance. Many companies that deal in all types of insurance have now realised that they can also help when it comes to your pets. I know at the beginning of this article I explained the cost implications when it comes to your pets being older, however, they cost you money all through their lives. When they are young, they need to be vaccinated and neutered (if you are a responsible parent of course)!

One company that appears to have been a pioneer in the area of pet insurance is More Than, anyone who has not seen the ad with the Morgan Freeman voice over must not have a television, their pet insurance policies, in my opinion are 2nd to none. Here are some of the benefits you will receive with a pet insurance policy with More Than:

  • They will beat any quote that you receive when it comes to the time when you need to renew your pet insurance policy.
  • You can have a policy that will cost you as little as £7.00 per month.
  • The pet insurance that you receive covers all vet bills up to £7,000.
  • It will not matter how old you dog or cat is, you can start to insure them from the minute they are 8 weeks old until (God forbid) they die.
  • You will receive a 24 hour 7 day a week vet hotline service, so if you are worried there will be someone on the end of the phone to help, not matter what time of day it is.
  • You can also receive up to £600 towards advertising costs should your pet go missing, this can be a harrowing time for anyone that has a pet and knowing that you have this to fall back on with your pet insurance policy is a real bonus.
  • If you want to take your pet abroad, be aware that not many companies offer insurance for this, More Than do. Funnily enough they cover both cats and dogs for this. Your pet will be insured just like a human being so if he or she should need medical treatment whilst you are on holiday, you will not be hit with a massive bill.

The reason that I have mentioned the benefits that you will receive with a More Than pet insurance policy is that cheapest is not always best. We in the UK are well known for our love of animals and we tend to go that extra mile when taking care of our pets. Make sure that when you are looking for a pet insurance policy that you check exactly what you will receive for the money you are spending. The last thing you need is to book your pet in for an expensive operation only to find that your pet insurance policy will not cover you for it.

One of the pitfalls that you can come up against is that should your pet be diagnosed with an ongoing health issue such as cancer or kidney and liver problems, many pet insurance policies will only cover the treatment they require for the first 12 months. This can be a huge problem to you; many dogs and cats can live for a long time with an ongoing health issue with the right treatment. If your pet does have an ongoing health issue and it is diagnosed early on in life you will more than likely need to be covered for a number of years….make sure that you check this out before signing on the dotted line!

I have only mentioned More Than as a pet insurance option in this article; however, there are many large insurance companies out there that offer great pet insurance policies. I have used More Than purely as an example so that you can get an idea of what sort of cover is available for your pet. Do bear in mind however that this company will only cover cats or dogs.

If you happen to have an exotic pet such as a reptile, spider or any other animal that falls into this bracket, do not despair, there are pet insurance policies out there for you too. Many companies will take on an exotic pet and the type of cover you will receive is much the same as that for a cat or dog. Except for the fact that should you wish to take you exotic pet on holiday with you, I doubt you would find any company that would cover this…..be sensible, ask a friend to look after he or she for you instead!

Whatever type of pet you may have you’ll find a pet insurance policy to suit you. If you are someone who truly loves animals and likes to help out with donations to charity from time to time, why not check out the pet insurance policies that the RSPCA have to offer. When you take out a pet insurance policy with them, part of your premium will go towards helping the charity, a bit like killing 2 birds with 1 stone (sorry for the pun, no offense intended). Some of the benefits you will get with a pet insurance policy from the RSPCA other than helping the charity of course are as follows:

  • All of your vet fees will be covered.
  • Help with finding pets that are lost or stolen.
  • Help with accommodation costs should you, as the owner become ill and are not able to take care of your pet.

In Conclusion

Did you know that in the UK pet insurance is now more important to us than our own health insurance; research which has recently been undertaken has shown that up to 45% of pet owners will take out a pet insurance policy instead of a policy that will protect themselves from any health issues? We, in the UK are so besotted with our animals that we will give up on luxuries such as holidays, gym memberships and even alcohol and cigarettes in order to make those monthly payments on our pet insurance policies. I happen to the think that the latter of these will actually help to ensure that we as humans won’t actually need a health insurance policy for ourselves.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, I didn’t take out pet insurance until my 2 girls where much older. Don’t make the same mistake as me; take a look at pet insurance today.
